moraine
   (moh-RAYN) [French, from Savoyard dialect] Debris in the form of boulders, gravel, sand, and dirt, torn from mountain slopes by glacial movement and deposited at the sides or base of the glacier; a mound or ridge formed by such deposits. Long Island, New York, consists entirely of terminal moraine from the glaciers of the last Ice Age.
   The moraine pens up the vast field of icebergs that keeps ships away from the front of the glacier.
